Chapter Nine

Roxy

“If either of them dies because of you, I swear I will kill you myself.”

Roxy glared at Guinevere as they came to a stop outside of Mia’s clinic. With Josef having been bitten, hospitals were far too much of a risk. Yes, Mia worked for the gang to patch them up, but she was also the only one who could help them in this situation. Josef slumped in the front seat, his head bent to his chest as he panted. Fur coated his skin and claws protruded from his nail beds.

“Hold on.” Roxy climbed out of the car and rushed to the other side, her heart in her throat. Andy was still unconscious. He wasn’t bleeding much but his throat and shoulder were both swelling; internal bleeding, then. Roxy yanked open both doors, not sure which one needed her help more.

“Take Josef,” Guinevere said, and Roxy noticed that she had her hand pressed firmly over Andy’s neck. Blood welled between her fingers. “This one will be fine, but you have to get him restrained before...”

She flinched, her pale skin marble-like in the sunlight. Come to think of it, she looked like she was about to pass out herself. Roxy hesitated only for a single moment before she seized Josef under the armpits and pulled him from the car. They hadn’t stopped so she could suck out the venom, and his skin was starting to turn a sickly green-gray. Vivid green crusts circled the bite wound on his neck. He snarled at her, but when she spoke in a low, soothing voice, those snarls faded to silence.

“Just hold on,” she told him again. “Dr. Mia will know what to do.”

And if she doesn’t?

Mia came to the door just as Roxy reached it, dragging Josef. Her eyes widened at the sight of him, and she quickly ushered the two of them inside.

“He was bitten by a vampire,” Roxy told Mia, struggling to keep her voice even. “It’s been about half an hour.”

“In here.” Mia opened a door to a room that appeared to be made from pure stainless steel.

A table lay in the middle, with thick leather bands hanging from it. At the sight of them, Josef nearly tore himself from Roxy’s grasp. He lashed out at the doctor, but she jumped aside easily and circled him to help Roxy heft him onto the table.

“Tie him down, quickly.”

“Josef, it’s okay,” she tried to tell him as she fastened the leather down. He struggled, cursed and fought, but Mia held him down firmly until he was fully restrained.

Mia glanced at the wounds on his body and let out another soft curse. “Were there others bitten?”

“I...” Roxy didn’t know.

“He’s covered in wolf bites.”

Roxy shook her head. “I don’t know. It happened too fast. Andy’s in the car, he’s not in good shape.”

Mia gave her a searching glance, but either she wasn’t suspicious, or she wasn’t going to ask questions. “Go get him, put him across the hall. First priority is getting the venom in Josef neutralized, otherwise—”

“He’ll die,” a voice said from the doorway.
